How to Avoid Shoulder Repetitive Strain Injury or RSI
Shoulder RSI
If you are an active sportsperson, computer user, or musician… BE AWARE! With poor technique, you could be setting yourself up for Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). I am seeing an increasing number of patients with repetitive strain shoulder injuries so it is well worth taking steps to prevent RSI.
Follow these tips to help avoid Shoulder RSI
1) Use pads to support the arm especially for computer users
2) Maintain correct ergonomic posture
3) Take regular breaks
4) Stretch the tight muscles
5 )Apply ice and/or heat on sore areas to reduce inflammation

And don't be afraid to speak up at work if something's wrong or if you're being prevented from making any changes to your workstation. A lot of employers are waking up to ergonomics now but if you've got one that's hostile, speak to HR. You're entitled to be comfortable at your computer, particularly if you're going to be sat at it for most of your working day.
Also, stand up and stretch regularly. It isn't just about supplying the equipment, it is about behaviour too. No-one's going to yell at you for taking thirty seconds to stretch your arms and focus your eyes elsewhere. And if they do, speak to HR. I can't imagine that thirty seconds of inactivity is going to bring a company to its knees.
