How to Treat Shoulder Dislocation

For all types of shoulder dislocation, the treatment of choice is painkillers, muscle relaxants and reducing the humeral head to its original position. The problem is that this is often easier said than done!

Putting the shoulder back in after dislocating your shoulder may require an anesthetic because of muscle spasm and adhesion. The patient is continued on painkillers, kept in a sling and gradually encouraged to do home exercises. Subsequently the range of movements is increased over a few weeks to regain strength and stability.

How to Treat Shoulder Bursitis

The first step in treating shoulder bursitis is to reduce shoulder inflammation. I always tell my patients that prevention is the best cure.  I know that it is difficult, but you must try to avoid doing things that cause the inflammation. For example, do not reach for things if that action causes pain.

If the pain persists anti-inflammatory medicines be required. However, anti-inflammatory drugs should not be taken continuously.

Once the initial inflammation subsides, some simple shoulder exercises should be enough to help treat this condition.

If the condition fails to improve, cortisone injections or steroids may be recommended by your doctor and in a small number of cases shoulder surgery may be required.

Can Acupuncture Cure Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen Shoulder, or Adhesive Capsulitis, is the progressive and spontaneous inflammation of the shoulder.

In acupuncture, small needles are inserted into specific points on the body to relieve pain. In a recent study published in the Hong Kong Medical Journal, thirty-five adults diagnosed with Frozen Shoulder were randomly split into either an exercise group, or an exercise plus acupuncture group, and treated for six weeks.

Patients with right-shoulder pain had the needle inserted in the left leg, and left-shoulder pain was treated with a needle in the right leg. Patients receiving acupuncture in along with shoulder exercises showed overall greater improvement in shoulder mobility.

There are some criticisms of the Hong Kong study, but as acupuncture is generally considered safe, using acupuncture to treat Frozen Shoulder is worth considering.
