Exercises For Shoulder Pain

Gym exercises to avoid if you suffer shoulder pain

Don’t aggravate your shoulder painshoulder pain stretch exercise

In general there are some gym exercises that I would recommend avoiding while you’re suffering from shoulder pain or neck pain because it’s very important not to aggravate the shoulder or neck injury or put the shoulder through unnatural motions.

You should try to avoid any exercise the places unnecessary pressure on your shoulders or the compromise the shoulder position for example the military press, wide grip lateral pull downs and the bench-press.

I would suggest that you avoid doing exercises like the military press which involves lifting dumbbells over your head especially if you have a rotator cuff injury. The bench press is another exercise that you should consider avoiding if you’re suffering from shoulder pain. The shoulders take very large loads during bench-press exercises that puts a great deal of pressure on your joints.

Lateral pull downs also compromises the position of the shoulder and should be avoided until your shoulder is fully recovered. The side fly weightlifting exercise is also best avoided while you’re suffering from shoulder pain.

Preventing shoulder pain when doing gym exercises

Gym exercises especially if not done correctly are a frequent cause of shoulder pain. It’s really important to ensure that you using the correct technique for the exercise and equipment.

Should you avoid doing exercises if you suffer from shoulder pain?

Is it safe to exercise with shoulder pain?shoulder pain swiss ball exercise

Are people right when they say you avoid doing exercises if you suffer from shoulder pain?

Pain is the body’s warning system, its way of letting you know something is wrong. Many people assume that because their shoulder is painful they should automatically avoid exercises that involve using the shoulder. Actually, for many shoulder conditions avoiding using shoulder can actually make your shoulder condition worse. However, as with any medical condition, do seek proper medical advice before undertaking exercises.

Do you suffer from shouder blade pain?

shoulder blade pain

shoulder blade pain

Wearing a bra has been implicated as possible causes of a range of problems from shoulder blade pain to indigestion, and back pain.

I’m not sure about indegestion, but as a physiotherapist I can tell you that a properly fitting bra can help prevent shoulder, neck and back pain.

Is your bra causing shoulder blade pain?

Someone once said that a bra is a bit like a suspension bridge…they both need to be well engineeered to give safe support. No two women are the same so there really is nothing better than having a proper bra fitting. You may be surprised that you aren’t even the size you thought you were, many women find that they have been wearing the wrong sized bra for years.bra shoulder blade pain

Over-tightening you bra may cause shoulder blade pain

If you suffer from shoulder blade pain your over-tightened bra may be the cause.

Most women don’t bother to have a proper fitting to get a bra that is right for them. So my advice is loosen your bra straps if you experience shoulder blade pain and do have a proper bra fitting.

Are backpacks a threat to your child’s health?

Can backpacks cause shoulder, neck and back pain?shoulder, neck and back pain

As a new term starts and we pack our children off to school perhaps it is time to think about something that many of us take for granted, school backpacks.

Almost every child carry some kind of bag to school. But can the bag that the child was wearing actually be bad for the child health?

Can the backpack that your child is wearing be the cause of shoulder, neck and back pain either now or in the future?

Survery research on shoulder, neck and back pain caused by backpacks

A recent study published in the journal Spine seems to confirm what physiotherapists and many parents have long suspected, that backpacks can cause shoulder, neck and back pain if they are too heavy or worn incorrectly.

The Spine study used a special MRI scanner to study 11-year-old children wearing backpacks of various weights up to 26lb.

Perhaps not surprisingly as the weight in the backpack was increased so did the amount of pain that the children reported feeling according to the study.

Backpack tips to avoid shoulder, neck and back pain problems

The most important tips for avoiding health problems when wearing a backpack is to keep the pack as light as possible.

Encourage children to only carry the books they actually need that day in their backpack to help prevent shoulder, neck and back pain.

Tip two is to tighten the backpack straps to keep the backpack close to the child’s body. This will help prevent bruising caused by the bag moving about.

Thirdly try to distribute the weight in the pack evenly and make use of sections and pockets.

Try to buy a backpack with padded shoulder straps that will help to prevent shoulder soreness.

I would suggest avoiding single strap sling style backpacks because this type of backpack puts all the weight on one shoulder.

Finally, a note for the ladies, you might benefit from reducing the weight in your shoulder bags too.

You might well ask why you would want to use ice for shoulder pain when its so cold? Won’t the cold just make the pain worse? The answer is “No”, not in most case it won’t.

Why use ice for shoulder treatment?

Well, as I explain in more detail in this shoulder treatment article, using an [easyazon-link asin=”B000EAPNCQ”]ice pack[/easyazon-link] really can help to improve the results you get in healing your shoulder pain. Ice is excellent for reducing inflammation and swelling that often aggravates shoulder pain and it also helps to numb the pain. Practice this regularly and you will soon notice the difference in your overall situation.

Pendulum Exercise

Both online, and at my clinics I am frequently asked what is the best exercise to start relieving shoulder pain? The exercises that I recommend will depend on the individual patient, but in general the first exercise that I recommend is a passive exercise that puts very little pressure on the shoulder, but gets the shoulder moving and starts rehab.

The Pendulum Shoulder Exercise

The Pendulum Exercise is designed to improve the range of mobility in your stiff shoulder. For full details and a video showing you how to perform the exercise, please click the link below:

Right shoulder blade pain

Causes of Right Shoulder Blade Painright shoulder blade pain

Right shoulder blade pain may be the result of overexertion, sleeping on the shoulder in an awkward position, slumping over a computer keyboard, or even wearing an ill-fitting bra. The normal aging process also contributes to many cases of shoulder pain and is the result of years of wear and tear on the shoulder, neck, back, and arms.

Serious Conditions that can cause Right Shoulder Blade Pain

There are many minor causes of shoulder blade pain, so please don’t get immediately alarmed. However, right shoulder blade pain can be related to more serious conditions so my advice if you’re suffering from right shoulder blade pain is to get it checked out by a doctor.

How to Treat Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder Dislocation Treatment

For all types of shoulder dislocation, the treatment of choice is painkillers, muscle relaxants and reducing the humeral head to its original position. The problem is that this is often easier said than done!

Putting the shoulder back in after dislocating your shoulder may require an anesthetic because of muscle spasm and adhesion. The patient is continued on painkillers, kept in a sling and gradually encouraged to do home exercises. Subsequently the range of movements is increased over a few weeks to regain strength and stability.

Shoulder Dislocation Recurrence

A big problem with shoulder dislocation is recurrence. If the first dislocation occurs within the age of 20, there is a 90% chance of shoulder dislocation recurrance, however physical therapy and a good shoulder strengthening program will reduce the likelihood.
