The Rotator Cuff
The rotator cuff is a group of strong ropelike fibers and muscles, and it is the most active part of the shoulder. When tissues in the shoulder get damaged or inflamed numerous rotator cuff disorders can occur. The most prevalent are impingement, bursitis, and tendonitis. In the shoulder, a bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that serves as a cushion between the tendons and the bones, and when inflamed it causes great pain. Impingement symptoms include trouble stretching above the head, weakness of the shoulder muscles, and difficulty reaching up behind the back. Tears of the rotator cuff are also common, especially in athletes.
