Shoulder and Neck Pain Treatment

Treatment for neck and shoulder pain in most cases is very simple, and can be done at home.

The first and most important thing is rest. Use the injured area for a little as possible for 2-3 days in an effort to let it heal.

You don’t have to sit propped up on a pillow all day long, but if you work on a construction site or do other physical work, it’s time to take a couple of days off.

Apply ice to the injured area. Ice can be applied in multiple ways, in a Ziploc from the freezer, wrapped up in a towel, or by an ice pack.

My personal favorite is from a bag of frozen peas.

The peas are tiny and will not melt, instead of the bulky chunks of ice, and they will mold to your shoulder if you use a small package because they don’t have much wiggle room.

If the pain is severe, or lasts more than a few days consult a doctor or physical therapist.

An X-ray is the most frequently used test for neck and shoulder pain. They have the ability to reveal space between two spinal bones, tumors, slipped discs, narrowing of the spinal canal, fractures, and arthritis-like diseases.

If the X-ray reveals nothing, an MRI scan or CT scan may be taken to get a closer look at where the pain is coming from.

Magnetic resonance imaging is non-invasive and valuable in assessing pain and failure to respond to treatment.

CT scans are used when more information is needed, like if a fracture is suggested, or if the aorta is suspected as the primary source of pain.
