Shoulder-Hand Syndrome
Shoulder-hand syndrome, or reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome can be defined as a rare clinical condition in which a person experiences severe long-lasting shoulder pain or pain in his or her leg.
The condition can occur after an injury, an infection, myocardial infraction or stroke. Usually girls are more affected than boys. Damage to nerve fibers may also trigger the condition.
Symptoms of shoulder–hand syndrome are sweating, thickened nails, dry skin, and muscle weakness, intense pain, swelling and burning sensation in the arms or legs.
Diagnostic Procedures like X-rays, bone scan, diagnostic sympathetic block test, and a test can map skin’s temperature can help confirm the diagnosis.
Medications like Non-steroid anti-inflamatory drugs (NSAIDS), corticosteroids and counter-irritant ointments may help to alleviate the pain. Physical therapy is also recommended in order to maintain the movement of the patient which is one of the important goals.
