Shoulder Inflammation
The physical sign of shoulder inflammation is swelling of tissue, including muscles, tendons, ligaments and a reflexive shortening of the muscles. Shoulder inflammation can restrict the movement of the shoulder joint and cause mild to severe shoulder pain.
Causes of Shoulder Inflammation
Because the shoulder has four different joints, there are several ways for injury to occur that results in inflammation and pain. The following are the most common causes of shoulder inflammation.
Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
Tendonitis of the rotator cuff, (where the arm meets the shoulder joint), is among the major causes of shoulder inflammation. Rotator cuff tendonitis is often due to overusing this joint in sports activities such as golf or tennis.
Frozen Shoulder
A condition called frozen shoulder that leads to stiffness and immobility also causes inflammation.
Shoulder Dislocation
A shoulder dislocation in which the arm bone comes out of the shoulder socket results in trauma and shoulder inflammation.
Shoulder Arthritis
Arthritis in the shoulder joint is not very common, but is another cause of shoulder inflammation.
Calcific Tendonitis
Calcium deposits, also called calcific tendonitis, in the tendons of the shoulder also trigger shoulder inflammation.
Symptoms of Shoulder Inflammation
There are many warning symptoms to encourage you to see your doctor about shoulder inflammation. These include a shoulder joint that looks deformed or swollen, shoulder pain that is consistent and worsens at night, an inability to raise your arm above your head, redness and warmth around the shoulder joint accompanied by fever, extreme pain when trying to carry anything using that arm, and any pain or swelling that lasts for more than two days.
